    2. The future of English Studies is probably related to technology since the 21st century is the age of technology.
    3. There are endless opportunities for advanced degrees in English Studies, examples include: writer, advertiser, technical writer, teacher, etc.

  2. 1. English Studies is the study of english including its origins, usage, and creation and interpretation of literature and information.
    2. I don't know what the future will be. Maybe books won't exist and we'll only write over the internet but I don't know. I think that the language will last. The study of English will most likely change in some small ways in the future but it's hard to say in which ways it will change.
    3. You can get a MFA in creative writing. You can get your PHD in literature, linguistics(at some schools), general english. You can teach english or study the way people teach english. You can get a degree in technical writing and translation. You can study film.
4.It has made me think more about what I want to do in the future. There are so many things I didn't even know. I looked up things one can do with linguistics online and one of the jobs was a speech therapist. I never considered that, but looking forward it is a definite consideration now. I learned that sometimes you just need to write and good ideas come. I learned that sometimes you start with kind of a stupid idea, do some research or something, and suddenly your idea changes completely and you write until one in the morning.

  3. 1. it is the study of anything associated with the written word. Poetry, books, blogs, the list can go on for days.

    2. I think that the future of english studies will inevitably end up mainly in the digital world, esspecially in the classroom, but i do not think that computers and the like will ever completly replace handwritten pieces or printed books.

    3. you can be a teacher, or a technical writer, or a journalist, or a packaging specialist, or a novelist (once again, another list that could go on for days)

    4. I have gained immense amounts of highly useful instruction that i do not think i would have been able to gain anywhere else. It was a very special experience to work with highly trained professors. It was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity that i will not leave to waste.

  4. 1. English Studies is the major in college in which you learn about the many different genres of English, such as Creative Writing, Linguistics, Technical Writing, etc.

    2. The future of English Studies is that, hopefully, it will incorporate more genres. Also, hopefully it is going to become more recognized and a more popular field of study. It's possible that more people will take this course because of how much varied classes there are and how much they are interested.

    3. You can major and get advanced degrees in pretty much any English Studies genre, such as an MFA (Master of Fine Arts). You may also major in another subject and incorporate the two majors together for a job (a science magazine for example or a thesis about a certain subject).

    4. I have gained the knowledge of the many different courses in English Studies. I have also learned about becoming a better writer and how to improve my writing in the future. English Studies is what I am going to plan on majoring in because of my interest for it, mainly my interest for Creative Writing.

  6. 1. English Studies is a huge umbrella term that includes many branches previously not associated with "English". It includes creative writing, linguistics, rhetoric, visual culture, film studies, literature and a bunch of other obvious branches that I'm forgetting. Basically, English Studies includes anything that has to do with our language and the effects it has on our lives.

    2. At this rate, I think that English Studies will probably expand to include even more branches and maybe even split off into more specific disciplines. I'm not really sure what that would entail or how one would further categorize the branches since they interrelate so much, but it will probably happen. I also think that English Studies will become a term used by more and more people to replace "English". For me anyway, this summer was the first time I had heard of it so maybe I'll start to use it more and hopefully it will rub off on others...

    3. One can get specific degrees or general degrees; it depends on personal preference and the type of job one is looking for. Masters and doctorate degrees are available, some offered more widely than others. Personally, I believe it is more beneficial to get a higher degree in English Studies because with so many people getting English BA's, a higher degree would put someone far above the rest of the crowd (obviously).

    4. As I stated previously, I didn't even know what English Studies included. I now have a pretty solid understanding of this and what I've learned about it made me love it that much more. Also, my experience here enforced my suspicion that I cannot live without doing something related to English and that my job someday will most likely have to be with English. I have not had a good English instructor for a long time so I had kind of forgotten how much I loved this subject. I'm glad I was able to come here and reaffirm that love which is going to help me choose what I want to do for college and the rest of my life.

  7. 1. English studies involves the studying of Englsih and anything in that area.

2.I think the future of English studies is going to be a bit more broad then now. We've learned about a lot of things in the English area, and keep hearing that there is more, so I think that there will be even more area's to study. As for where is it headed, well, I think I just answered that.

    3. Well, there are alot of options. You can get a degree in a area of your choice within the English field, and apply it to many kinds of jobs.

    4. What have I gained? Well, I think I have a better grasp on team work when it comes to projects. I've never been too good at letting other people help when something is supposed to be a group effort, but with the magazine project, I was a lot better about letting other people help and not trying to take control. I feel like I've expanded my knowlege in certain areas, and I now know what I want to consider as a possible major in college, and what I know that I certainly don't want to.

  8. 1. At the heart of English Studies is the English language. Every subfield of English grows out of the trunk of the language called English.

    2. It's elucidating to re-read William Riley Parker's College English article from 1967, titled "Where Do English Departments Come From?" In it, he shows how quickly and radically English departments evolved in just the 80 years from their founding in the late 1800s to the mid 1900s, and he predicts that they will continue to do so. The 42 years since he published the article have proved him correct. Composition studies and technical communication have become a much bigger part of English than anyone might have predicted in 1967, much less 1876. In particular, developments in communication technology will drive further changes in English Studies' development.

    3. Advanced degrees are morphing and/or sprouting with the developments I've alluded to above. NDSU's new PhD in English is a prime example.

4.NDSU is one of the best places to experience the ongoing development of English Studies.

  9. 1. English Studies is a much broader field than what I had imagined. The study of literature, linguistics, rhetoric, and many other categories fall under this study. Ultimately, it is the study of the written and spoken word, what words mean, their origin, and how they affect people.

    2. I would hope that the written does not die out. Although technology keeps advancing us forward, there is a power in writing something down by hand. I also hope that the popularity of this field will improve and that we'll find more people interested in English Studies.

    3. One can be a technical writer, teacher, novelist, journalist, packaging specialist, advertiser, or one can even study film.

    4. I have obtained a broader view of the English field and the career possibilities that accompany it. I have also gained the insight on how to become a better writer.

  10. 1) English Studies is the field of study/major that covers a wide variety of courses relating to the Engligh language, such as Creative Writing, Literature, Journalism, Linguistics, etc.

2)The field of English seems to be flourishing and growing, with many career opportunities, particularly in technical writing/communications, and teaching English.

    3) There seem to be so many different and intertwining job opportunities, that I'm overwhelmed. :)

    4) I have a much wider schema of what English Studies encompass...and my curiosity has been much stimulated! Though there have been a lot of challenges, particularly involving compromise and learning how to give and accept critisism, it's been great being here.
