Application Questions

  1. Discuss the similarities/differences you find in the texts.
  2. What might be the purpose of these similarities/differences?
  3. If the theme is the same/similar, why choose different ways of conveying it?

    1. They're all associated with death. Some talked about how you should die, and others talked about how you live before you die.

    2. To convince the readers to agree with the author's point of view on death.

    3. They're all poems but they have different poetic formats. They're same yet different; a paradox.

  2. 7.All these are about the objectification of the body. Some of this is good(Hips)and some is bad(Barbie Doll)
    8.To illustrate all aspects of looking at the body.Sometimes this creates a deep emotional connection(Drowned Man), even when you don't know them.Sometimes if someone points out our body's faults, we lose ourselves(Barbie Doll). Sometimes it makes us wonder at the beauty of the body(Hips and Drowned Man). And sometimes it shows that some people will just never accept you because the way they percieve your body(Barbie Doll and Story of the body)
    9.Each author has his/her own opinion and way of looking at the body.

  3. 1. Some of the similarities between the texts include male dominance/sexism, stereotypes, and have ambiguous messages. Some of the differences include the style in which they were written.

    2. The purpose of the similarities are to draw our attention to universal themes. The purpose of the differences is to contrast the different situations in which this theme is present.

    3. The theme, in this case, is male dominance which is a universal theme with many different aspects and situations. Conveying it in a different way reveals those aspects and situations.
