Billion Dollar Question

Please affirm, expand, or revise your reflections on English Studies, given our morning's discussion.

  1. I have been pleasantly suprised by the immense variety of topics and work that English Studies encompasses...I realize now that my idea of the work one can get in the field of English was pretty narrow-minded.

The instruction and excercises I've had here will, I expect, be very useful when I need to make a decision about a college major. :)

I would have liked spending more time on disciplines other than creative writing, such and linguistics and literature, but I am certainly happy for the over-view in those areas that we did get, and I know that most of the students in English here were probably most interested in creative writing.

It's also been great to meet some of the faculty that I'll likely be working with if I do choose to go to NDSU, and simply to meet other people who are passionate about the same things I am.

There have certainly been challenges in this program, but I think most were social rather than academic...in fact, I was expecting to be pushed further academically, and it might be worth considering making it more challenging next year...just sayin'. :)

    Thanks so much!

  3. I still agree with myself (wow that sounds weird) on what I said earlier about what English Studies includes. I too think that it is going to change a lot, even before we are done with college. As of right now, I have two fields that I'm looking into, music composition and English studies (I know that one is large....) and now I'm trying to decide which one I want to focus on. I'm thinking a major in some type of English Studies and a minor or double major in music comp. But I have a long time to decide and I change my mind a lot so I guess I'll just have to see what happens.

  4. I don't think I need to revise my previous response on the English Studies. I would just like to reiterate and state that this field is so broad and expansive that it can be used for many different career choices. It is expanding so fast, and I think that it will become even more popular as time passes.

It was great to meet and converse with the faculty. I enjoyed the experience. It was also nice to interact with people who are mutually interested in English.

Thank you to everyone who took time out of their days to teach us. I personally appreciated it very much, and I would love to experience this again.

  5. I was so surprised by how many different courses are in English studies. When you hear "English Studies," you don't get that impression of having so many different classes. I was amazed when I realized the truth.

It was kind of hard to learn everything because we only had three weeks instead of six. I would have liked it if we had six weeks because we could have learned so much more about each discipline in English Studies. It was kind of a disappointment, but I was glad that the English Program at least got funding!

The teachers and professors were very good and I enjoyed working with them. I believe that they helped me better understand each subject in English Studies.

I would like to major in English Studies when I go to college, preferably Creative Writing and also Film Studies because of my interest for both of those subjects.

If I had to come up with a different name for English Studies instead of "English Studies"...I really couldn't. Even though the word English kind of makes it sound more like launguage than anything, the name of the study fits it. Also, I'm not creative with coming up with names...

  6. I was very suprised at how exciting the english field could be. I will admit that when i came to gov. school i was expecting the english program to be fairly drab. By the second day i was very excited and couldnt wait to see what we would be learning the next day.

I am so happy for this opportunity to study with all of these talented people and consider myself very lucky to recive this special instruction from all of the professors.

It was a fairly difficult program, from both an academic and social standpoint, but i am glad i had that challenge and hope that i will be able to take what i had learned and be able to use it to my advantage during the next school year as well as life in general.

Many thanks to everybody! you are all amazing teachers and i am so glad for this opportunity

  7. I am really amazed at the opportunities availiable in college. In just an hour or so I learned so many useful things I can use in the future. English has so many facets and it is growing as a field. I hope to use it in some way in the future, and I think I will unless the language dies out for some reason;).I have really appreciated this experience. It expanded my knowledge. Like Linnea, I would have liked it if we spent more time on linguistics and lit, but I liked most of the other things we learned too. It would be cool to have the program more challenging in the years to come, but not challenging deadlines-I just barely finished my writing. Maybe homework in the other disciplines we studied-I liked the rhetoric homework we got. Some of these experiences I know were once in a lifetime- I can't believe that I've been to some college classes already. One of the highlights of this experience was meeting the graduate students. I'm not so scared of writing long papers anymore and I have a better idea of what the research process is like. I think English Studies is a good name for the most part. I don't think there really will ever be a short name to describe what needs to be said when one says "English Studies". English is so multifaceted, and I definitely got the gist of that here. Thank you for the wonderful experience-I think some of this knowledge will influence me for years to come.

  8. Since English Studies is so broad, there's no correct definition for it. If I have to give a new name for English Studies, I would call it "the philosophy studies," since English and philosophy are correlated. Unfortunately, I haven't decided my major in college yet, however, I will consider English Studies as one of the possible choices. After this morning's discussion, I would like to revise my reflections made earlier in the day. English is not just for those who enjoy writing and reading, it's for anybody. Like one of the professors said, "If you like everything, join English!" I really enjoyed my experience in English Studies at Governor's School this year. Thanks for the fantastic "summer vacation!"

  9. English Studies is very broad. It is very hard to describe all the aspects of this discipline. In fact, I didn't even know rhetoric was part of English Studies before I attended this program.

Right now, I don't have a decision on what I might major in once I get to college, but something in the English field is definitely on my list. Of course, I will continue writing after gov School. Hopefully, I will continue fostering my English skills.

One thing I thought was interesting was that some colleges don't offer linguistics. I really thought linguistics was interesting and also, of course, creative writing. It's been a fun and challenging experience and I hope to achieve many things in the future.

  10. O wow! It seems like we're constantly finding out more things we can do in English. Insted of there being a million things we could study and advance in, I now think there is a billion. I've really enjoyed the past three weeks and all of the things we've studied and discussed. I think that this has certainly been an expierence I won't forget, and the the knowledge I've gained will be something I'll apply in my school and everyday life.
